For any of you who may be new to roleplaying:
What is Role Playing?
Role Playing is where several players gather together and act out a character of the imagination or creation. It is similar to story writing, except there are more writers.
Getting Started
If you are new to Role Playing then you may want to learn the tricks of the trade on a Topic that already exists. The usual routine is as follows:
The Topic Master, creator of the Role Play, will post an introduction (Get you interested!).
After that will be the rules, the start of the story, his/her character(s) and then possibly a Bio layout will be posted.
To join, you should ask the creator of the topic (The Topic/Thread Master), politely.
If you are allowed to join, then you may begin to control your character in the story, if not leave without fuss. There will be plenty more chances.
Tricks of the Trade
Flexibility
Many Role Players will not appreciate an ultimate character that destroys everything in one blink. Try to make changes to your character to fit in with the story and make it fair on everyone, this will lead to a much better story and that means lots more fun for everyone!
Grammar
This is the key to Role Playing. Grammar, spelling and punctuation will be welcomed warmly where as chat speak and the like will be looked down upon. If you are not sure of a spelling, use a word processing programme or a dictionary to check, no need to rush.
Slang/Internet Speak
A big no-no is Internet speak. This includes shortening of words such as ‘Y’ for ‘Why’ and ‘U’ for ‘You’ or even ‘4’ for ‘for’, this is frowned upon by almost all Role Players and you will probably not be appreciated if you use such Speak in the Role Playing Forum.
All about the Entrance
Wait until the time is right to join. Just because your accepted into the Topic, it doesn’t mean you have to instantly post. Many Thread Masters prefer the players to join when it is most convenient. So if everyone is fighting a giant troll in the forest, do not walk into the Tavern and order a beer.
Names
Use your name as much as possible, rather than He or She. This will make it easier for other Role Players to remember you name and they will find it easier to Role Play with you.
SPAM
Spamming is very annoying to Role Players so I strongly advise you steer clear of consecutive one liner posts.
God Modding
Taking control of another Players character is called God Modding and many Players do not like this. You may, of course control their character to a certain degree, with their permission only.
Auto-hitting
Probably one of the most frowned upon problems in Role Player. Auto hitting is when you post continuously hitting another Players Character without giving them a chance to retaliate.
Originality and Information
Make your characters interesting and new. If you use the same old story and little description it does not give other Players a clear view of your character, which doesn’t help much. If your character has a scar on his big toe, then lets know about it!
The Word on the Street
OOC
Ooc stands for ‘Out of Character’. This is when you are speaking in a Role Play but not talking as your character. Do not overuse this luxury though as it may be considered Spam.
Spam
Stupid Pointless Annoying Message
Examples of these are
‘Bob the builder likes pancakes’
These are annoying and you should defiantly avoid them.
Wms/Tms/Gms:
Tm- Threadmaster, these are the creators of the thread and can grant access or decline access into a thread.
Wm: Warmaster, these can start fights when the time is right
Gms: Gamemasters, these can alter the storyline somewhat, but not greatly, and can grant access or decline it.
Controlling you Character
After creating a interesting Bio and being accepted into the Topic you will be expected to make an introductory post.
Note: Do not use Asteriks or first person to describe the movements of your character. This is most certainly not appreciated.
Example
Do not
*I walk up to you and say* “Hello, what’s your name”
Do
John walked silently through the town. Holding his weapon by his side he scanned the area carefully. He spotted another person. John decided to interrogate them he made way towards the figure.
“Greetings, my name is Jonathon Rose, care to tell me yours?”
Fighting Guide
Of course, battles and skirmishes will be a big part of your Role Playing. This will be a quick guide to the basics.
Patience
Once you have posted your move, wait for the other Player (Your opponent) to post his retaliation. Don’t go making seventeen posts in a row, not allowing the other Player a sniff at a move.
Good Guys
If your character good, the chances are your character is going to get beaten up. The good guys never win first so best you just accept it. You revenge will come.
Bad Guys
Okay, winning at the start is all very well and you should enjoy it while you can because in the end, the good guys get the last laugh. Except it and move onto your next evil plot.
Spot Light
Of course, everyone wants the eyes on themselves but only one person can be in the light at one time. If it is not you, just wait for your turn. Do not go stealing the thunder off the other player. When it is your turn in the limelight though, make the best of it.
Moderation
Do not make your character super powerful and never loses his composure because this is just not realistic and ruins the fun for everyone, making a very boring read.
